What do you mean, you don't like IE6? Really?
Today I read the latest in the long, long, long line of why I won’t support IE6. How fucking droll. If IE6 support is part of your job or the contract - then that’s what it is, that’s the job, that’s the challenge of your work.
I am sick and tired of the same old boring posts and even web sites dedicated to why IE6 should die. We all know IE6 should die. Microsoft knows IE6 should die. Heck,...

My take on Google dropping H.264
If you can’t be arsed to read this post, it ends with: it’s a good thing.
WebM: open, license free, quality (very nearly) equal to H.264
H.264: license deferred but not free, is on Safari and MobileSafari (apparently on possibly 93m devices a lot of devices - edit)
Based on this simple comparison, to me it totally makes sense to drop support for H.264. Google can play the...

When it's okay to tell a child to f**k off!
I read this post this morning about a disgruntled employee changing the Harrods lights to read “Fuck off Harrods”.
What’s best is the quote by the grandfather:
said ‘look everybody’ and pointed up to the lights – but you know what the lights said? They said f**k off. And that is not an appropriate message for a child. At least not at Christmas time
I love the fact...

Hold off on deploying HTML5 in websites?
[Please note that this post is intentionally unedited. It’s a raw rant that would probably go down better in a pub. Since we’re not in a pub, this medium will have to do.]
So, go read this equally link baiting article on why you should hold off HTML5. Then come back and let’s talk.
I’ll say up front, that I’m pretty certain that Philippe Le Hégaret’s quotes...

HTML is the BASIC of the web
So Jeremy said it this morning in response to Aral getting excited about Scratch.
BASIC for me and thousands of others was the chance to write some very simple code and see it do something. Me, as a kid, could control a computer:
10 PRINT "Hello World!"
20 GOTO 10
HTML offers the same quick reward system because I write the following, save it and view it:
<title>Hello...

Should we ignore video for Safari?
So I’m thinking out loud here, like a brain fart, but with an actual thought.
VP8 and the webM video format. It’s going to be implemented natively in Chrome, Opera and Firefox. IE9 will support webM if the decoder is installed, but won’t ship with it natively. Flash will provide the webM decoder, so if the user has the latest version of Flash installed, webM will work in IE9 -...

ToF: H.264
From: Thoughts on Flash
When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.
I like the use of “in browsers like”, since, well, those are the only browsers supporting H.264 right now (and...

ToF: Touch
From: Thoughts on Flash:
Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?
Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the...
On experts-exchange.com
Experts Exchange is one of the leaches of the internet. I spent a lot of time and effort putting information out in to the wild for free, and when I have a problem to solve and Google takes me to Experts Exchange, I cringe. Register just to see what someone suggested? I think not.
I think these kinds of site have their whole concept of the Open Web backwards.
Don’t get me wrong, payed...
